In a world where Christmas music is constantly played at this time of year and everybody already knows the holiday classics inside and out, here’s an outfit that takes them and makes them new again. The Trans Siberian Orchestra gives the songs their own style and flavor, as big guitars and a violinist play the recognizable melody lines, and solid backbeat of drums, guitars and bass fill the arena they play. To add even more sound to the group, there’s an eight person orchestra of stringed instruments backing them up and gives the music an epic aura.

However, that’s only half of the show you’re getting. The visuals they put on will blow you away, with great laser lights and moving platforms on the stage along with moving catwalks and scaffolds allow three dimensional movement of the performers. There’s also very impressive pyrotechnics that you can feel from the audience, it puts everyone in the hot seat! Plus, there’s very creative displays of video and combinational use of video and set changing, allowing the set to morph from a typical flat rock stage to the entrance of a theater almost seamlessly. I haven’t seen actual stage shows with transitions as interesting as that!

There’s a great deal of talent to see on this stage, from the musicians themselves to the singing chorale, who compliment their wonderful singing with well choreographed dances. It’s especially more impressive when they run up to the raised platforms, and even onto the catwalks suspended over the front rows of the audience. Some of the band even walked into the audience as they played. In addition, much of the Christmas music is framed with a story of a runaway little girl who takes refuge in an old theater, narrated in rhyme by a big, full of life storyteller who takes care to fill every syllable with cheer and happiness.

The entire experience is a great spectacle of sound, sight, and even temperature! But at its heart it puts you in the Christmas mood, even if it’s a more rock oriented show than what you’d expect from Christmas music. Plus, the people of the group themselves are wonderful. Before the show they brought out the director of the Seattle Humane Society and donated several thousand dollars of their proceeds to charity, showing not only their generosity but also their willingness to include the charity themselves in advertising the gesture. If Christmas music of the stadium rock variety suits your fancy, this show can’t be missed if it comes to a town near you.
