As many of you have noticed,“THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER” is now available everywhere on DVD. My little ones eye spotted it when it appeared the first release day on the shelf at our local Safeway. Now for Kauai, that’s kinda a huge deal. You see, we don’t EVER get anything the first day it releases.. Not even movies at the small family-owned movie theater we have here. A new type of dish soap, cat food, Lunchables, NOPE, don’t expect to see those for a whole month or more after the release date.

So to have this movie, show up the FIRST day it was released at our single Safeway on our island of 63,000 was a HUGE deal. And believe me.. I was impressed.

Why was this movie out on the shelfs the first day of release? When it took two-weeks to get it in our local theater, after it was released everywhere else? My guess would be because Mr. SpongeBob attracts a WIDE audience. Not only children, but those adults with that kid heart. Like myself, I enjoy the occasional SpongeBob humor. It’s not something I can watch for hours on end, but it’s enough to get me to chuckle. And that says a lot coming from someone who stopped watching cartoons when I was 13 years old.

But enough about this blabber.. You’re here to find out what I thought about the movie right? Okay, lets get on with it.

character-1Paramount Picture’s “hit blockbuster movie,” as film critics call it, did win the box office during opening weekend with a whopping $55.4 MILLION but also won the hearts of many.

The movie tells the story of SpongeBob and his friends in Bikini Bottom. When the secret formula for the Krabby Patties go missing, SpongeBob and his friends are forced to go to the surface to find who stole it.

This is the typical SpongeBob, it seems someone is always trying to steal the formula. But this time it ISN’T plankton and instead of trying to steal it, he helps. OK, I know sometimes plankton can be a little soft hearted, but going to the surface to help that’s a pretty big jump. Non the less, it was pretty awesome.

So the team heads to the surface, with help from a talking dolphin they get a boost and end up in the middle of a crowded beach. I’m a bit surprised, the adults didn’t react as crazy as I thought they should, the kids just seems to be intreated that SpongeBob and his pals where here, and alive.

The scent of the Krabby Patties struck the team right in the nose and they found out that Pirate Burger Beard stole the formula.

From here on out, SpongeBob and his friends unleash their inner superheroes, becoming buff and each given a personal super power, to chase down and reclaim the secret formula.

Once they turn into superheroes that’s when it starts to get interesting. Their powers are quite awesome and there is some real ‘laugh out loud’ moments for both adult and child during these scenes.

In the end, as always, the Krabby Patty formula is safe and SpongeBob and his friends return to the sea at the Bikini Bottom.

Over all, this movie really gets the kids going. My 8 year old, loved the show. She can watch it every day if she wants to. It never gets old. For me, watching it once was enough. It was funny and cute, but the humor is meant to amuse children, and although it does get the adult to chuckle it isn’t going to be my favorite movie of all time. But I truly don’t believe that SpongeBob is trying to attract the viewers of adults, but the hearts of kids. And with that being said, they do that spot on.

This movie gets a 4 rating out of 5 from me, while my little one rates it a 5 out of 5!

It seems after all these years, SpongeBob and his friends are still providing hours of laughter and smiles for all ages.
