Elena of Avalor

This is part of a sponsored collaboration with DiMe Media and Disney Channel. However, all opinions expressed are my own.

Growing up family has always been one of the most important things to me. And to Elena, Disney’s newest and first Latina princess, family is everything to her as well. Elena of Avalor is a television series that premiered July 22, on Disney Channel.

To help kick off the premiere my family and I had the privilege of hosting an Elena of Avalor premiere party. We had tons of fun in addition to goodies and crafts for the kids.

Well planning for the party I made sure to ask my abuela (grandmother) for help. My abuela is very important to me and has always been a huge part of my life.

When I was younger many of my days were spent traveling or creating adventures with her. I remember when I was younger I always strived to be just like her. She was such an inspiration and really pushed to find the greater good in life and people.

Grandmother’s are such an amazing blessing and my abuela truly helped form me into who I am today.

When there were tough times my abuela was always there. Sometimes, I’ll admit I was not the most patient or easy child to deal with, but she always used her kind and soft words to push me up.

“Patience is a virtue,” she’d say. “Only those who have patience and kindness can change the world. You are strong my la nieta and you have the capability to do greatness but it comes from within.”

These words. I still live by them. That’s partially how I became who I am today. When we were born we weren’t promised anything, we weren’t giving instruction booklets, we weren’t guaranteed nothing. And when it comes to being able to make it that’s when family comes in.

There have been many times in my life that if my family wasn’t there I don’t know what would have happened. But with perseverance, with patience and kindness and with a little bit of my abuela’s words, I too was able to find greatness. And each day is a new adventure, and a new battle. Each day is filled with obstacles and roller coasters that are just thrown in our way, but with family anything is possible.

And in Disney’s Elena of Avalor, Elena and her family do just that.

When it comes to Elena’s life there is difficulties, there is battles that without her family, she may not be who she is today.

In the first episode “First day of Rule” Elena officially becomes Crown Princess and she has to rescue her sister, which was just another roller coaster along the path of life.

Elena has much adventures to set out and being the new ruler of Avalor she’ll have to conquer evil witches and sorcerers to save her kingdom. But with the help of her family she can achieve greatness.

  2. Hola! I Hope you’re doing well! I just read your entry on Elena and how your own abuela impacted your life for the better. My paternal abuela also impacted my life in a possitive way. She was always ready with a hug and some kind truths to help me through tough times. Her house was the Come as you are house. I say that bc there were many times I arrived upset due to situations I couldn’t control. Instead of insisting I cheer up, chin up or any other plakating term adults often tell children, my abuela just hugged me and allowed me to cry and talk until I felt better. She always listened and made time for me. Her love language was food. Whether she had made dinner or was cooking it when we arrived, she made sure there was enough for everyone. And cooking with her was fun! sadly, she’s no longer with us. But I will always carry her lessons of unconditional love and perseverence with me. Now to Elena! Growing up as a Latina, I didn’t have a princess who looked like me, shared my familia’s traditions or spoke my second language. I loved and learned a lot from Jasmine and Ariel, but there was still a yearning in my heart for a princess I could fully relate to. Fast forward to July 22, 2016. Enter Elena Kasstio Florez. A princess who not only looks like me and many other Latinas out there, she also shared a lot of my familia’s traditions. She has a strong sense of familia and what’s right. In the six months that followed, Elena taught me more about myself and what it means to be strong, overcome fears than any other princess Disney ever created. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way about her. Elena is compassionate, kind, bold, brave and adventurous. Plus, she can fight her own battles. She doesn’t need a man to save her! She does the saving herself! One of One of my favorite aspects of the show is Elena’s bond with her little sister, Isabel, Isa, as Elena affectionately calls her. I love how both sisters are there for each other, no matter what. Another aspect of the show I love is the music! I find myself humming Elena’s songs or just outright singing them every day. The two songs that have helped me the most are The Magic Within You and Let Love Light the Way. The Magic Within You has helped me deal with trauma recovery and PTSD. As for Let Love Light the Way, it reminds me how we should treat one another every day. Elena has helped me find the self confidence I Thought I had lost due to medical trauma. She’s definitely been a blessing in my life.
